The statement lip
Many brides like to add a bright pop of colour to their big day style, which instantly transforms their makeup look to fresh, edgy and sexy
Lipstick colours are endless and preferences are personal but when it comes to statement shades here are my favourites:
Pink is surprisingly wearable for virtually all skin tones, whether its candy, coral or bright hot pink, it can instantly 'pretty' a face and look ultra feminine. Katy Perry frequently looks stunning in rose shades against her fair complexion, where as Jesscia Alba's honey toned skin looks amazing with fuschia. My go to shades are MAC in the shade Lovelorn and Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense in shades #33 and #36.
Red is classic and we will always associate it with the likes of sophisticated icon Marilyn Monroe. A great modernised version of the red lippy wearer is Rita Ora, who wears it as a staple. My absolute favourite red lipsticks are Chanel Rouge Allure in the shade Pirate and MAC in the shades Ruby Woo and MAC Red.
A couple of key things to remember when wearing a statement lip:
- Prepare
Preparation may sound a little over the top, but exfoliation and a good quality lip balm are essential in preparing your lips and getting them smooth and youthful looking. Keeping your lips moisturised will also help to prevent lipstick from bleeding out of the lip line
- Play with shades
You may have a colour in mind, but it pays to experiment with varying shades to find the most flattering. To create a fuller looking lip I often use two or three lipstick shades on one person to give the illusion of a voluminous pout. As a general rule colours which have a blue undertone tend to make your teeth appear whiter
- Texture is important
Matte lips are the most fashionable of lipstick textures at the moment but are the hardest to pull off. Your lips have to be the best condition possible, so bare my first point of preparation in mind. A more forgiving texture is satin as it tends to be more moisturising
- Where will you be
Glosses tend to be the most youthful looking when on, but they don't have the durability of a lipstick. Also remember that if you're going to be outside then wind+lipgloss+hair down can potentially get messy
- Wear with confidence!
If you're going to wear a lip colour then find the shade for you and own it. It will be eye catching and bold but don't be scared, enjoy making an impact
